Birgit Bang fæddist í Árósum í Danmörku 13. maí 1936. Foreldrar hennar voru Ole Bang apótekari á Sauðárkróki og k.h. Minna Elísa Bang. ,,Birgit ólst upp á Sauðárkróki. Hún starfaði framan af við afgreiðslustörf í apóteki föður síns en drýgstan hluta starfsævinnar vann hún á Heilsustofnun NLFÍ í Hveragerði. Eftir að hún lét af störfum fluttist hún aftur til Sauðárkróks og bjó þar síðustu árin." Birgit eignaðist einn son með Ásmundi Jónssyni.
