Birna fæddist að Litla-Hóli í Eyjafirði 13. mars 1910. Faðir Birnu var Ingimar Hallgrímsson, einn af stofnendum KEA og bóndi að Litla-Hóli í Eyjafirði. Móðir Birnu var Sigurbjörg Helga Jónsdóttir, fædd á Kotungsstöðum í Hálshreppi. Birna giftist Jóhannesi Wæhle Jóhannssyni, iðnverkamanni og síðar verkstjóra hjá Sambandsverksmiðjunum á Akureyri, þau bjuggu alla tíð á Akureyri og eignuðust fjögur börn.
