Fjóla Gunnlaugsdóttir fæddist í Víðinesi í Hjaltadal 1. ágúst 1918. Foreldrar hennar voru Gunnlaugur Jónsson og Sigríður Guðmundsdóttir í Víðinesi. ,,Fjóla ólst upp í Víðinesi og bjó þar sína búskapartíð. Í æsku vann hún við barnagæslu og fleiri störf á Siglufirði og á nokkrum bæjum í Kolbeinsdal og Hjaltadal. Fjóla söng nokkur ár í kirkjukór Hóladómkirkju og starfaði meðal annars í Kvenfélagi Hólahrepps um langt skeið. Í kjölfar heilablæðingar árið 1995 flutti Fjóla á Sauðárkrók. Dvaldi hún þar rúman áratug á Dvalarheimili aldraðra." Fjóla giftist Guðmundi Jóhanni Sigmundssyni, f. á Hofi á Höfðaströnd, þau eignuðust þau þrjá syni, tveir þeirra komust á legg.
