Friðrik var fæddur á Ögmundarstöðum í Skagafirði árið 1919. Foreldrar hans voru Helga Pálsdóttir og Margeir Jónsson kennari og fræðimaður. Seinni kona Margeirs var Helga Óskarsdóttir. Friðrik kvæntist Aldínu (Öldu) Snæbjörtu Ellertsdóttur húsfreyju, þau eignuðust sjö börn. Friðrik lauk cand, mag. námi í íslenskum fræðum árið 1949. Þá hóf hann kennslu við Gagnfræðaskólann á Sauðárkróki og Iðnskólans á Sauðárkróki; var skólastjóri í báðum skólum.
