Gísli fæddist að Ystu-Grund í Blönduhlíð, sonur Þorláks Jónssonar b. á Ystu Grund og k.h. Sigríðar Hannesdóttur. ,,Gísli ólst upp hjá foreldrum sínum á Ystu-Grund og byrjaði búskap á hálfri jörðinni við fráfall föður síns á móti Hannesi bróður sínum. Bóndi á Ystu-Grund 1865-72, Hjaltastöðum 1872-88, Frostastöðum 1888-1903. Hreppstjóri í Akrahreppi 1881-1903. Fyrsti hreppsnefndaroddviti Akrahrepps 1875-78 og um langt árabil í hreppsnefnd Akrahrepps." Gísli kvæntist Sigríði Magnúsdóttur (1837-1926) árið 1865, saman eignuðust þau einn son.
