Fædd og uppalin í Litladal í Svínavatnshreppi. Kvæntist Jóni Jóhannessyni b. í Árnesi árið 1894, þau bjuggu þar til 1929 er þau fluttu að Fagranesi í Öxnadal og þaðan til Akureyrar. Gróa var síðast búsett í Reykjavík. Gróa og Jón eignuðust tvær dætur saman, fyrir átti Jón son sem Gróa gekk í móðurstað.
