History
Ólst upp í Vík með foreldrum sínum Árna J. Hafstað og Ingibjörgu Sigurðardóttur. Guðbjörg stundaði gagnfræðanám í Reykjavík og húsmæðraskóla sótti hún í Danmörku og lauk húsmæðrakennaraprófi 1952. Árið 1953 réðist hún sem kennari í Húsmæðraskólanum á Varmalandi. Árið 1960 kvæntist hún Sigurþóri Hjörleifssyni frá Messuholti, þau eignuðust þrjár dætur.
