Foreldrar: Eggert Briem Gunnlaugsson sýslumaður á Reynistað og Ingibjörg Eiríksdóttir. Fæddur á Melgraseyri við Ísafjarðardjúp. Gunnlaugur varð snemma ráðsmaður á búi föður síns og hafði alla bústjórn á hendi á annan áratug, til 1882. Var einnig hin síðari ár fulltrúi hans og hélt manntalsþing og fl. í umboði hans. Var búsettur fyrst á Hjaltastöðum, en lengst á Reynistað, frá 1872-1882. Var við verslun í Reykjavík 1882-1885, verslunarstjóri í Hafnarfirði 1885-1897. Gunnlaugur var þingmaður Skagfirðinga 1883-1885. Kvæntist Friðriku Claessen og eignuðust þau einn son.
