Foreldrar: Magnús Hallgrímsson prestur á Fagranesi, síðar prófastur á Reynistað og k.h. Guðrún Jónasdóttir. Hallgrímur ólst upp hjá foreldrum sínum á Fagranesi og Hafsteinsstöðum. Stúdent frá Reykjavík 1886, cand. theol. frá Prestaskólanum 1888. Veitt Rípurprestakall 1888 og vígður sama ár. Veitt Glaumbæjarprestakall 1894, fékk lausn frá embætti 1935. Bóndi á Ríp 1889-1894 og í Glaumbæ 1895-1935. Eftir að hann lét af embætti dvaldi hann lengst af á Marbæli og síðast í Hátúni. Kvæntist Sigríði Þorsteinsdóttur árið 1895 og eignaðist með henni tvær dætur, þau skildu.
