Haraldur Stefánsson fæddist á Halldórsstöðum á Langholti 6. janúar 1902, sonur Stefáns Bjarnasonar og Aðalbjargar Magnúsdóttur. Hálfs árs gamall fór hann í fóstur til Sigurðar Jónssonar oddvita í Brautarholti og k.h. Jóhönnu Steinsdóttur. Hann var bóndi í Brautarholti (áður Litlu-Seylu) á Langholti.
Kona hans var Jóhanna Gunnarsdóttir (1901-1986) frá Keflavík í Hegranesi, þau eignuðust fimm börn.
