Helgi Pétursson fæddist árið 1865 á Fjalli í Sléttuhlíð. Foreldrar: Pétur Sigmundsson b. að Fjalli og k.h. Sigríður Helgadóttir. Helgi stundaði sjómennsku framan af en hóf svo búskap ásamt konu sinni, Margréti Sigurðardóttur frá Garðshorni á Höfðaströnd árið 1897. Bjuggu í Garðshorni 1897-1898, á hluta af Hofi á Höfðaströnd 1898-1901, á Spáná í Unadal 1901-1902, á Geirmundarhóli í Hrollleifsdal 1902-1910 og á Kappastöðum í Sléttuhlíð 1910-1915. Eftir það áttu þau heimili hjá Vilhelmínu dóttur sinni á Hamri í Hegranesi. Helgi og Margrét eignuðust átta börn.
