Hjalti Jósafat Guðmundsson fæddist á Sauðárkróki 13. júni 1929. Foreldrar hans voru Hólmfríður Jónasdóttir og Guðmundur Jósafatsson. 23. janúar 1952 kvæntist Hjalti Kristínu Björgu Svavarsdóttur og eignuðust þau fimm börn. ,,Hjalti ólst upp á Sauðárkróki. Hann var húsasmíðameistari og starfaði við það fag alla sína tíð. Hann var oft kallaður til sem prófdómari við sveinspróf og vann mikið með iðnsveinafélaginu á Sauðárkróki. Hjalti var einn af stofnendum Kiwanisklúbbsins Drangeyjar á Sauðárkróki og var virkur félagsmaður til síðasta dags."
