History
Hjörtur fæddist á Þorljótsstöðum í Skagafirði. Foreldrar hans voru Hjálmar Stefán Þorláksson bóndi og Guðleif Kristín Þorsteinsdóttir. Hjörtur var kennari og skólastjóri á Flateyri, einnig sparisjóðsstjóri, hreppstjóri og sýslunefnadarmaður. Hann var gerður að heiðursborgara Flateyrarhrepps árið 1975. Hjörtur þótti ágætur hagyrðingur. Hann var kvæntur Aðalheiði Rögnu Sveinsdóttur, þau eignuðust tvo syni.
