Sonur Hólmfríðar Jónasdóttur, verkakonu og skáldkonu frá Hofdölum, og Guðmundar Jósafatssonar, verkamanns frá Krossanesi. Uppvaxtarár sín dvaldi Hörður að mestu í foreldrahúsum á Sauðárkróki. Sjómaður og vélgæslumaður á Sauðárkróki. Þá vann hann einnig við hin ýmsu störf í landi lengi hjá Kaupfélagi Skagfirðinga sem afgreiðslumaður og síðustu árin sem afgreiðslumaður hjá ÁTVR á Sauðárkróki. Einnig hljóðfæraleikari. Kvæntist Sólborgu Valdimarsdóttur, þau eignuðust tvær dætur.
