Foreldrar: Árni Bjarnason Thorsteinson landfógeti í Reykjavík, f. 1839 og Soffía Kristjana Hannesdóttir Thorsteinson húsfreyja, f. 1839. Árni varð stúdent frá Lærða skólanum 1890 og Cand.phil. 1891. Las lög um hríð en lauk ekki prófi. Lærði ljósmyndum á ljósmyndastofu Charles Petersen í Kaupmannahöfn árið 1897. Rak ljósmyndastofu í Reykjavík árin 1897-1918. Var bókhaldari hjá Sjóvártryggingafélagi Íslands 1918-1929 og starfsmaður Landsbankans frá 1930. Maki: Helga Einarsdóttir Thorsteinson húsfreyja, f. 22.10.1875. Þau eignuðust 4 börn.
