Hinn 6. júní 1998 sameinaðist hreppurinn 10 öðrum sveitarfélögum í Skagafirði: Skefilsstaðahreppi, Sauðárkrókskaupstað, Skarðshreppi, Seyluhreppi, Lýtingsstaðahreppi, Rípurhreppi, Viðvíkurhreppi, Hólahreppi, Hofshreppi og Fljótahreppi, og mynduðu þau saman Sveitarfélagið Skagafjörð.
