History
Foreldrar: Ferdinand Halldórsson b. á Þorleifsstöðum í Svarfaðardal og k.h. Sólveig Jónsdóttir. Síðar kvæntist móðir hans Guðmundi Péturssyni b. í Smiðsgerði. Haustið 1911 fór Jón í Hólaskóla og lauk þaðan búfræðiprófi vorið 1913 með fyrst einkunn. Árið 1914 kvæntist hann Hólmfríði Jónsdóttur frá Fornastöðum í Fnjóskadal, þau eignuðust sex börn og tóku eina fósturdóttur. Bóndi í Smiðsgerði í Kolbeinsdal 1916-1919, síðan í Þingeyjarsýslu.
