Foreldrar: Jóhannes Jónsson, lengst af bóndi í Árnesi í Lýtingsstaðahreppi og f.k.h. Anna Bjarnadóttir frá Sjávarborg. Jón var bóndi í Árnesi 1891-1929. Flutti þá að Fagranesi í Öxnadal og þaðan til Akureyrar. Jón átti sæti í hreppsnefnd um nokkurt árabil og sat einnig í stjórn búnaðarfélags hreppsins. Jón kvæntist árið 1894 Gróu Sveinsdóttur frá Litladal í Svínavatnshreppi, þau eignuðust saman tvær dætur, fyrir átti Jón son með Ólínu Ingibjörgu Ólafsdóttur.
