Foreldrar: Jón Jónsson b. Efra-Nesi og k.h. María Jóhannsdóttir. Ársgömlum var Jóni komið í fóstur til hjónanna Sigurfinns Bjarnasonar og Jóhönnu Sigurðardóttur er þá bjuggu á Herjólfsstöðum í Laxárdal, síðar á Meyjarlandi á Reykjaströnd. Bóndi á Ingveldarstöðum syðri á Reykjaströnd 1916-1921, á Daðastöðum á Reykjaströnd 1921-1946 og á Steini á Reykjaströnd 1946-1962. Jón var um áratugaskeið póstur á Reykjaströnd frá árinu 1928, forðagæslumaður og baðstjóri sauðfjárböðunar, einnig formaður í Lestrarfélagi Skarðshrepps sem á þeim árum gegndi að nokkru hlutverki ungmennafélags. Jón kvæntist Sigfríði Jóhannsdóttur frá Hóli á Skaga, þau eignuðust fimm börn.
