Jón fæddist á Mýri í Bárðardal og ólst þar upp. Lengst af búsettur á Sauðárkróki. Jón kvæntist Hólmfríði Friðriksdóttur, þau eignuðust þrjú börn. Jón var m.a. formaður stéttarfélagsins Öldunnar. Árið 2011 hlaut Jón riddarakross hinnar íslensku fálkaorðu fyrir störf í þágu verkalýðsmála og réttindabaráttu.
