Jón fæddist á Sauðárkróki. Foreldrar hans voru Tómas Gíslason, kaupmaður á Sauðárkróki og kona hans Elínborg Jónsdóttir. Jón kvæntist 21. júní 1947 Önnu Árnadóttur, þau eignuðust fimm börn. ,,Jón var stúdent frá MA 1946. Nam leðuriðnað við Cordwainers Technical College í London 1947-48. Framkvæmdastjóri Nýju skóverksmiðjunnar hf. í Reykjavík 1948-1958 og Múlalundar vinnustofu Öryrkjabandalags SÍBS í Reykjavík 1959-1964. Stofnaði heildverslunina Hoffell sf. ásamt Magnúsi Péturssyni og Klæðagerðina Elízu ásamt fleirum. Rak einnig um tíma Skótízkuna og Elízubúðina ásamt eiginkonu sinni."
