Sonur Haraldar Jóhannessonar síðast b. á Bakka í Viðvíkursveit og k.h. Önnu Bergsdóttur. Kjartan fæddist á Frostastöðum í Blönduhlíð, þegar hann var 15 ára fluttu foreldrar hans að Unastöðum í Kolbeinsdal. Kvæntist Maríu Hermannsdóttur frá Lóni í Viðvíkursveit, þau bjuggu bæði í Gröf á Höfðaströnd og á Miklabæ í Óslandshlíð en síðast á Sauðárkróki þar sem Kjartan starfaði sem bifreiðastjóri. Kjartan og María eignuðust einn son.
