Sonur Erlendar Eysteinssonar og Ástríðar Helgu Sigurðardóttur á Beinkeldu í Reykjabraut. Erlendur ólst upp með foreldrum sínum, fyrst á Beinkeldu og síðar á Stóru-Giljá. Fór til Vesturheims um tvítugt. Vitað er að hann lauk gagnfræðiprófi frá Menntaskólanum á Akureyri 1919. Lengst af búsettur í San Francisco.
