Magnús Jónsson var fæddur á Sauðárkróki 27. júlí 1925, þriðja barn þeirra hjóna Jóns Björnssonar og Unnar Magnúsdóttur. Hann ólst upp á Aðalgötu 17, þar sem hann bjó einnig síðustu árin ásamt eiginkonu sinni, Kristínu Helgadóttur. Magnús og Kristín hófu búskap sinn á Sauðárkróki árið 1947, þar sem þau bjuggu fram til 1968. Þeim fæddust fimm börn. Magnús vann við ýmiss konar störf, meðal annars hafnargerð, símalagnir, verslunarstörf og smíðar.
