Ólst upp hjá foreldum sínum í Hún.sýslu., var í vinnumennsku á ýmsum bæjum í Skefilsstaðahreppi 1878-1894, kvæntist það sama ár Sigurlaugu Gísladóttur. Fyrstu ár sín í hjónabandi voru þau ýmist í vinnumennsku eða húsmennsku þar til þau fluttu til Sauðárkróks árið 1905, í svokallaðan Jósefsbæ, síðar Ólafsbæ. Ólafur stundaði sjómennsku og verkamannavinnu. Ólafur og Sigurlaug eignuðust eina dóttur.
