Reynir var fæddur í Reykjavík 29. janúar 1924. Foreldrar hans voru hjónin Ragnheiður Sumarliðadóttir og Ludvig Carl Magnússon frá Sauðárkróki. ,,Reynir kvæntist ekki en var í sambúð með Signýju Ólafsdóttur, en hún og hennar fjölskylda sýndu honum ætíð tryggð og vináttu. Eftir lát móður sinnar dvaldi Reynir í fá ár hjá frændfólki sínu að Breiðabólsstað í Miðdölum, en hóf nám í bókbandi hjá Ársæli Árnasyni bókbandsmeistara á stríðsárunum seinni og lauk því námi ásamt iðnskóla á tilskildum tíma. Eftir námið starfaði hann síðan að iðn sinni bæði hjá meistara sínum og fleiri bókbandsfyrirtækjum eins og Félagsbókbandinu og Gutenberg. Í mörg ár starfaði Reynir við afgreiðslu hjá dagbl. "Tíminn"."
