Biographical history
Foreldrar hans voru Jónas Jónasson og Þórey Guðrún Jónasdóttir. Hálfán ólst upp með foreldrum sínum, lengst af í Litluhlíð í Vesturdal, síðan á Þorljótsstöðum. Hann fór einn vetur í Hvítárbakkaskóla (1909-1910) en tók svo við búi foreldra sinna á Þorljótsstöðum. Tveimur árum síðar hóf hann búskap að Giljum, síðan á Breið, aftur á Giljum og í Sölvanesi, að lokum flutti hann til Siglufjarðar. Hálfdán var vel skáldmæltur og fékkst töluvert við kveðskap, orti kvæði og skrifaði ljóðabréf. Hálfdán kvæntist Guðrúnu Jónatansdóttur frá Ölduhrygg í Svartárdal, þau eignuðust tvö börn.
