Sigurgeir Jónsson fæddist á Sauðárkróki 30. ágúst 1918. Foreldrar hans voru Jón Þ. Björnsson skólastjóri frá Veðramóti í Vindhælishreppi í A-Hún. og kona hans, Geirlaug Jóhannesdóttir, ættuð úr Eyjafirði. ,,Skömmu eftir að Sigurgeir útskrifaðist úr Verslunarskóla íslands vorið 1942, tók hann við gjaldkerastörfum hjá bæjarverkfræðingi Reykjavíkur, starfaði síðan um skeið hjá Skjalasafni Reykjavíkur og eftir það sem vaktmaður hjá Skeljungi."
