Foreldrar hans voru Finnbogi Bjarnason frá Þorsteinsstöðum og Sigrún Eiríksdóttir frá Sölvanesi. Foreldrar hans fluttu frá Mið-Grund að Hrauni í Öxnadal árið 1935, voru þar í eitt ár, á Stokkahlöðum í Hrafnagilshreppi 1938-1940, á Kroppi í sömu sveit 1940-1942 og þaðan til Akureyrar.
