Foreldrar: Sigurður Árnason bóndi og hreppstjóri í Höfnum á Skaga og s.k.h., Sigurlaug Jónasdóttir frá Gili. Árni naut heimakennslu í æsku. Hann var bóndi í Eyjarkoti 1857-1859 en síðan í Höfnum til æviloka. Hreppstjóri um hríð og fyrstur oddviti í Vindhælishreppi 1874-1877. Sýslunefndarmaður frá 1880 til æviloka.
