Árni fæddist á Sauðárkróki árið 1927. Foreldrar hans voru Sigurður Sigurðsson sýslumaður Skagfirðinga og Stefanía Arnórsdóttir kona hans. Árni lærði til prests, var á Neskaupstað og síðast sóknarprestur á Blönduósi. Eginkona hans var Eyrún Gísladóttir. Þau eignuðust tvö börn, Arnór og Hildi.
