History
Foreldrar: Ólafur Jónsson og k.h. Valgerður Gunnarsdóttir á Ögmundarstöðum í Staðarhreppi. Gunnar ólst upp með foreldrum sínum fram að fermingu, fór þá að Eyhildarholti og fermdist þaðan. Hann var svo í vinnumennsku næstu ár, þar til hann kvæntist árið 1885 Sigurlaugu Magnúsdóttur frá Utanverðunesi. Fyrstu þrjú hjúskaparár sín bjuggu þau að Vík í Staðarhreppi en fluttu að Keflavík í Hegranesi 1888 þar sem þau bjuggu til æviloka. Meðfram búskapnum stundaði Gunnar veiðskap. Gunnar og Sigurlaug eignuðust 14 börn saman, 13 þeirra komust á legg. Fyrir hjónaband hafði Gunnar eignast einn son með Arnbjörgu Hannesdóttur.
