Guttormur var fæddur á Neskaupstað. Foreldrar hans voru Vigfús Guttormsson og Ingibjörg Guttormsson, fædd Biskoptoð. Guttormur var til sjós eftir að barnaskóla lauk. Hann lauk námi frá Sjómannaskólanum árið1951. Kona hans var Áslaug Sigurðardóttir snyrtifræðingur. Börn þeirra :Drengur sem lifði aðeins í þrjár vikur, og dæturnar Magnea og Sigurbjörg Ásta.
