Halldór var fæddur á Fjalli í Sæmundarhlíð í Skagafirði árið 1908. Foreldrar hans voru hjónin Sigurlaug Sigurðardóttir og Benedikt Sigurðsson. Halldór var við nám í Íþróttaskólanum í Haukadal í nokkra mánuði. Lengi bóndi og oddviti á Fjalli, síðast búsettur að Mánaþúfu í Varmahlíð. Kvæntist Þóru Þorkelsdóttur frá Miðsitju, þau ólu upp tvö fósturbörn.
