Egill Jónasson ólst upp á Völlum í Víðimýrarsókn í Skagafirði. Faðir: Jónas Egilsson (1864-1942), bóndi á Völlum. Móðir: Anna Kristín Jónsdóttir (1865-1941), húsfreyja á Völlum. Egill er skráður nemandi í gagnfræðiskóla á Akureyri árið 1920 og bókbindari á Akureyri árið 1930.
