Biographical history
Hannes Pálmi Pétursson fæddist 14. desember 1931 á Sauðárkróki. Hann ólst upp á Sauðárkróki hjá foreldrum sínum, Pétri Hannessyni (1893-1960) og Sigríði Sigtryggsdóttur (1894-1979). Hann var stúdent frá Menntaskólanum í Reykjavík árið 1952. Í kjölfarið stundaði hann nám í germönskum fræðum við háskólana í Köln og Heidelberg.
Hann útskrifaðist frá Háskóla Íslands árið 1959, Cand. mag. í íslenskum fræðum. Hans fyrsta bók kom út árið 1955, en hún nefnist Kvæðabók. Hann hefur gefið út fjölda bók, ljóð, ferðasögur, frásöguþættir og ævisögu Steingríms Thorsteinssonar. Árið 2011 kom út endurminningabók hans, Jarðlag í tímanum.
Hannes hefur sinnt ritstörfum eingöngu frá árinu 1976. Hann er búsettur á Álftanesi ásamt konu sinni Ingibjörgu Hauksdóttur (1939-).
