Soffía fæddist í Vestmannaeyjum 1. júní 1907. Hún var dóttir hjónanna Gísla J. Johnsen stórkaupmanns og konsúls og Ásdísar Önnu Gísladóttur. Ung að árum giftist Soffía Ísleifi Árnasyni, f. 20.4.1900, lögfræðingi, síðar lagaprófessor og borgardómara, d. 7.8.1962, þau eignuðust fjögur börn.
