Fædd í Stóru-Gröf á Langholti, dóttir Sigurjóns Markússonar og Guðrúnar Magnúsdóttur. Steinunn ólst upp í Eyhildarholti með föður sínum en móðir hennar lést þegar hún var 5 ára gömul. Steinunn kvæntist Jónasi Gunnarssyni frá Keflavík í Hegranesi, þau bjuggu lengst af í Hátúni og eignuðust tíu börn.
