Svanhildur Steinsdóttir fæddist í Neðra-Ási í Hjaltadal 17. okt. 1918. Foreldrar hennar voru hjónin Steinn Stefánsson og Soffía Jónsdóttir. Svanhildur giftist árið 1948 Garðari Björnssyni frá Viðvík og bjuggu þá í Neðra-Ási, þau eignuðust sjö börn og áttu einn fósturson. Svanhildur var kennari í Hólahreppi frá 1940 fram til 1989 með litlum hléum, og lengst af skólastjóri við Grunnskóla Hólahrepps.
