Vefnaðarnámskeið sótti hún á Hússtjórnarskólanum á Hallormsstað vorið 1944. Jóhanna var um tíma ráðskona hjá vegagerðarflokkum, m.a. á Öxnadalsheiði." Jóhanna giftist árið 1946 Magnúsi Halldóri Gíslasyni og bjuggu þau á Frostastöðum.
