Foreldrar: Gunnlaugur Gunnlaugsson b. á Skriðulandi og k.h. Kristín Sigurðardóttir. Sigurður reisti bú í Flögu í Hörgárdal 1862, fluttist að Skúfsstöðum 1866, keypti Skriðuland og fluttist þangað 1872, bjó þar til æviloka. Kvæntist Guðrúnu Jónsdóttur frá Spáná í Unadal, þau eignuðust fjögur börn. Sigurður var um skeið hreppstjóri í Hólahreppi og síðar oddviti.
