Foreldrar: Ásgrímur Steinsson og Guðrún Kjartansdóttir á Gautastöðum í Stíflu. Stefán ólst upp hjá foreldrum sínum. Bóndi í Tungu 1870-1975, Stóru Brekku 1875-1883 og í Efra Ási 1883-1930. Hann gróðursetti trjálund við bæ sinn og ræktaði garðjurtir í stórum stíl, sem var afar sjaldgæft á þeim tíma. Kvæntist Helgu Jónsdóttur (1845-1923), þau eignuðust fjögur börn sem upp komust.
