Fæddur og uppalinn á Hrauni á Skaga, sonur Sveins Jónatanssonar og Guðbjargar Jónsdóttur. Kvæntist Guðbjörgu Kristmundsdóttur frá Selá á Skaga, þau bjuggu í Kelduvík á Skaga 1914-1923 og á Tjörn á Skaga (A-Hún) 1923-1932. Sveinn stundaði sjómennsku meðfram búskapnum og sat um tíma í hreppsnefnd Vindhælishrepps. Sveinn og Guðbjörg eignuðust tíu börn.
