History
Foreldrar: Ólafur Sigurðsson bóndi og alþingismaður að Ási í Hegranesi og k.h. Sigurlaug Gunnarsdóttir. Gunnar ólst upp með foreldrum sínum í Ási. Fór til Danmerkur haustið 1879 að læra nýtísku vefnað og annan heimilisiðnað. Sneri aftur til Íslands 1880 og hafði þá meðferðis ýmis iðnaðartæki, svo sem hraðskyttuvefstól, lóskurðarvél, vaðmálapressur og fleira. Vann næstu ár við iðnaðarstörf hjá foreldrum sínum og tók til kennslu nemendur innan héraðs og utan, er lærðu meðferð ýmissa iðnaðartækja. Hann flutti frá Ási 1883 og bjó að Keldudal í Hegranesi 1883-1888, stundaði einnig iðnaðarstörf sín, var og 1883-1888 oddviti í Rípurhreppi. Fór búferlum að Lóni í Viðvíkursveit 1888 og bjó þar til 1897, en flutti þá aftur á hálfan Ás á móti bróður sínum og bjó þar til æviloka. Gunnar kvæntist Guðnýju Jónsdóttur frá Reykholti í Borgarfirði, þau eignuðust átta börn.
