Jón ólst upp á Hafsteinsstöðum hjá foreldrum sínum, Jóni Jónssyni hreppstjóra og k.h. Steinunni Árnadóttur. Hann stundaði nám í Hólaskóla og útskrifaðist búfræðingur vorið 1908. Bóndi á Hafsteinsstöðum 1919-1940, í Steinholti hjá Vík 1940-1951 og á Gýgjarhóli 1952-1972. Kvæntist Sigurbjörgu Jónsdóttur frá Kimbastöðum, þau eignuðust tvo syni.
