Barnabarn Jónasar Kristjánssonar læknis á Sauðárkróki og k.h. Hansínu Benediktsdóttur, dóttir Guðbjargar Birkis, dóttur þeirra. Regína fæddist í Reykjavík og ólst þar upp. Hún var formaður Nemendasambands Kvennaskólans þar sem hún stundaði nám 1954. Regína hefur starfað víða, m.a. hjá Þjóðminjasafni 1967 til 1976 og síðar hjá Reykjavíkurhöfn.
