Sigurlaug Jónsdóttir fæddist á Sauðárkróki 10. janúar 1929. Foreldrar hennar voru Anna Friðriksdóttir og Jón Sigvaldi Nikódemusson. ,,Veturinn 1948-1949 stundaði Sigurlaug nám við Húsmæðraskóla Reykjavíkur. Hún starfaði m.a. hjá Mjólkursamlagi Kaupfélag Skagfirðinga, Bæjarskrifstofu Sauðárkróks, Skrifstofu Kaupfélags Skagfirðinga og Sláturhúsi Kaupfélags Skagfirðinga." 17. júní 1956 giftist Sigurlaug Gunnari G. Helgasyni, þau eignuðust sex börn, fyrir átti Sigurlaug son með Júlíusi Gestssyni.
