Foreldrar: Gunnlaugur Þorsteinsson og Geirlaug Eiríksdóttir. Guðlaug ólst upp á Svaðastöðum en hún missti föður sinn 5. ára. Kvæntist Birni Þorkelssyni, þau bjuggu alla sína búskapartíð á Sveinsstöðum. Guðlaug og Björn eignuðust fimm börn, aðeins eitt þeirra komst á legg. Þau áttu eina fósturdóttur, Jakobínu Sveinsdóttur.
