History
Foreldrar: Magnús Benediktsson formaður á Sauðárkróki og k.h. Guðný Jónasdóttir. Þegar hún var 13 ára gömul missti hún föður sinn og ömmu úr taugaveiki. Unnur var næstelst systkina sinna og þurfti fljótlega eftir þetta að fara að vinna fyrir sér. Árið 1918 réðst hún vinnukona hjá Kristínu og Kristni Briem. Þar kynntist hún Jóni Björnssyni og kvæntust þau árið 1919. Árið 1920 keyptu þau sér eigið hús á Sauðárkróki og bjuggu þar næstu 60 árin, þau eignuðust fimm börn.
