Fellshreppur sameinaðist Hofshreppi og Hofsóshreppi árið 1990 undir nafninu Hofshreppur. Í jarðabók Árna og Páls heitir hreppurinn Sléttuhlíðarhreppur og virðist hafa heitið svo fram á fyrri hluta 19. aldar sbr. dómabækur Skagafjarðarsýslu.
